About me

Pat Sin Leng

My name is Phil, I’m a nobody really, just someone who likes living in HK and enjoys exploring the more off-the-beaten-path type places.

I have an interest in the local culture and history, and I enjoy walking in the hills and diving in the water.

When I’m not out and about, I am at home getting to grips with Bach and Tarrega on my guitar and looking after my three children. Oh yes, and plotting where to go next…

About this blog

This blog started life as a MSN Livespace’s journal of family outings in HK and the NT. I was writing it purely for myself and overseas family members but it evolved into a personal mission to discover all the places in the territory that the general public never usually see or even know about. Over time it’s evolved into a mishmash of out-of-the-way places, lesser known details and history, film locations, rants and just general observations of HK life – anything I find interesting and feel the need to share with the 3 other people that read this blog :-)

I’m motivated by the general opinion, on the various travel forums I used to frequent, that there isn’t much to do and see in Hong Kong beyond shopping, going up to the the Peak and seeing the Big Buddha.

Why Oriental Sweetlips? Well, it’s just my favourite fish (for it is…a fish) – Plectorhinchus vittatus. What can I say, I’m a scuba diver and fish are another interest. The name has stuck and become associated with this blog because I used it to set up the original live space blog.

I don’t claim that everything on here is new and undiscovered, it’s just that many of them are tucked away out of sight and never seen by anyone beyond the more curious. Not all are worth visiting on their own, but perhaps could be included on a general visit to the area in which they are located. Either way I hope it gives people some idea that Hong Kong isn’t just about the harbour and high rises.
